Keep a giffgaff Number Active Without a Plan

A practical guide to the six-month giffgaff inactivity rule, qualifying paid actions, incoming texts, roaming costs, and my month-five reminder.

I keep a giffgaff number for a boring reason: verification texts. I do not use it as my daily phone, and I rarely make calls with it. Paying almost £10 every month for that job started to feel absurd.

A giffgaff number does not need a continuously active monthly plan. It needs one qualifying activity within every six-month period.

I cancelled my contract, kept the PAYG credit already on the account, disabled automatic top-ups, and added a repeating calendar reminder for month five. In the UK, keeping the giffgaff number active can cost one 10p text.

The short version: at least once every six months, make a paid call, send a paid text, use mobile data, top up credit, or buy a plan. Receiving texts does not count. I act in month five rather than waiting for the deadline.

A giffgaff number kept for verification texts, with a month-five reminder and a 10p paid action.

The official six-month rule

The official giffgaff help page on SIM deactivation says a SIM is inactive when it has not been used for six months. To keep the giffgaff number active, complete any one of these actions:

  • make one chargeable call to another number;
  • send one chargeable SMS or MMS;
  • connect to the internet using mobile data;
  • buy Airtime Credit or a plan.

Emergency calls, Member Services, 0800 numbers, and free-rated activity do not satisfy the rule. Incoming verification codes do not count either. They prove the giffgaff number works today but do not reset the inactivity clock.

Actions that keep a giffgaff number active compared with incoming texts, which do not count.

Why I stopped buying monthly plans

My account had no active plan but still showed a contract with 13 months left. The giffgaff page listed a £65 early termination charge, while confirmation explicitly waived it. After cancellation, my £4.99 PAYG balance remained and automatic top-up stayed off. This was my account result, not a promise that every cancellation is free. Check your own final fee before confirming.

If the giffgaff number is already on PAYG with no contract or renewing plan, the answer is simpler. Keep enough credit for one paid activity and watch the six-month clock.

The cheapest activity I would use

In the UK, I would send one text to a normal UK mobile. The current giffgaff PAYG rates are:

ActivityCurrent UK priceMy choice
Send a standard text10pYes; predictable and easy to verify
Make a standard call25p per minuteWorks, but costs more
Use mobile data10p per MBNo; background traffic can run on
Add credit£10 minimumOnly when the balance is nearly empty

I use a non-giffgaff UK mobile because giffgaff-to-giffgaff activity can be free, while free-rated activity does not count. After sending on giffgaff, I confirm delivery and a 10p balance change. I avoid 0800 numbers, support lines, and free shortcodes. The aim is one unambiguous paid event.

Why my reminder is set for month five

"Once every six months" sounds generous until the SIM is in a drawer, the phone is flat, or roaming refuses to register on the day you remember it.

As soon as the text succeeds, I schedule the next reminder for five months later. At current UK pricing, the giffgaff number costs only a few dozen pence a year to maintain.

A month-five paid text resets the giffgaff inactivity clock immediately, before the six-month deadline.

giffgaff warns one month before deactivation and again roughly five days beforehand. I treat those emails as backups.

Keeping the giffgaff number abroad

The phone can receive texts abroad when a partner network is available, but outgoing prices depend on the country.

For example, the current China roaming page lists incoming texts as free, outgoing texts at 30p, calls and received calls at £1 per minute, and mobile data at 20p per MB. From China, I would send one ordinary text for the month-five activity. It costs more than the UK rate but far less than a monthly plan.

Check the giffgaff destination page rather than reusing the China price. I leave data roaming off because background syncing can cost more than one fixed-price text. If the SIM stays off, I test network registration before reminder day.

Automatic top-up and deactivation

For a giffgaff number used only for codes, I keep automatic top-up off. The official Credit guide says auto top-up can add credit when the balance falls below £3. The minimum online top-up is £10, followed by £5 increments up to £30.

I watch the giffgaff balance and top up only when needed. Deactivation is harder: giffgaff says an inactive SIM cannot be reactivated. For 30 days, a member can ask for a PAC and move the giffgaff number to another UK network. After that, the number may return to the pool. For a banking or 2FA number, that PAC window is a recovery route, not a plan.

My five-step routine

  1. Confirm that no plan or contract will renew.
  2. Disable auto top-up but keep enough PAYG credit for a text.
  3. Leave data roaming off.
  4. Every five months, send one paid text to a normal UK mobile.
  5. Confirm the charge, then schedule the next reminder.

That is enough for my giffgaff number. Incoming texts do not count, and month six is a deadline rather than the ideal time to act.

Frequently asked questions

Can a giffgaff number receive texts without a plan?

Yes. My account has no active plan and retains PAYG credit. The giffgaff SIM can receive texts with roaming coverage. Incoming texts are free in China.

Does texting another giffgaff number count?

It counts if chargeable. giffgaff-to-giffgaff activity may be free, so I use a non-giffgaff UK mobile and confirm that the balance falls.

Can I top up instead of sending a text?

Yes. A credit or plan purchase is a qualifying action. With a £10 minimum top-up, it is usually unnecessary when the giffgaff number already has enough credit for a paid text.
